Color, Color, and More Color

The fall/winter 2008 collection is color, color and more color in the Big Apple fashion scene.

Jun 09, 2008

We all remember the church wedding scene between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in the hit movie "Runaway Bride" depicting the sophisticated monochromatic New York City crowd with their designer sunglasses sitting as a proud tribute to black and white - in contrast to the more colorful Non-New York City crowd sitting on the opposing side of the aisle. Well, hold onto your hat because the fall/winter 2008 collection is color, color and more color in the Big Apple fashion scene.

The design team of Laura and Kate Mulleavy, also known as Rodarte (after their mother's maiden name) has crafted a collection of romantic and flowing dresses with filmy texture and brilliant color. From the fairy-like quality of the airy chiffon dresses meeting lacy knit stockings, to the metallic blue pencil-legged trousers and high textured multicolored jackets - a collection that is almost too beautiful to wear. The two California born sisters came to New York in 2005 with perseverance and talent tucked into their portfolio of designs. After only three seasons they were nominated for the coveted CFDA Perry Ellis Award. These two have made their mark on New York, and this upcoming season it is in bringing color and more romance to the 'black and white City."

The New Jersey born fabric artistry of Narciso Rodriguez has brought bold clean colors and lines to the luxuriance of the fabrics he utilizes. He has brought a contemporary sophistication to the table with an air of simplicity in the pleated skirt sporting a complimentary black jacket. Or, in keeping with his 1960s style brought up to date, classic black and white tweed suit. Rodriguez was the only designer to receive the CFDA Award for fashion two seasons in a row. Earlier this year Rodriguez journeyed to Washington, DC to appeal to Congress for the passing of the Design Piracy Prohibition Act which has been stuck in committee. The rationale behind this campaign was that designing a 250-piece collection for the fall and spring shows requires 6 months to a year in time, with a price tag of approximately $6 million in capital before sales. A designer may sell fifty of their design, whereas a copycat could sell as many as 8 million.

Our color, color and more color would not be complete without the works of Matthew Williamson. Known for his kaleidoscope of vivid colors and patterns, from the vibrant and sexy electric blue cashmere sweaters to the enviable rainbow patterned silk knit dress - and for those rainy days, shimmering lemon yellow patent leather coats - and to top it all off fur pieces gracing hoods, jackets and neck coverings. Texture and color combined with pattern and artistry. He is celebrated for creating "flashy not trashy" women of sophistication. Although he is best known for his women's wear collections, Williamson has also tried his hand at perfume, he designed an edition of luggage for Samsonite, and ventured into men's and children's clothing, This London born designer brings sparkle and vibrancy to the 2008 fall/winter season.
